MARIELLE MACLEMAN
by Marielle MacLeman
This edition of six bomber jackets is specially commissioned by Kunstverein Aughrim, and designed by artist Marielle MacLeman.
Conceived as a forest ranger jacket, this garment was partially inspired by the design of the Croatian National Parks uniforms encompassing the diverse landscapes of Croatia, and further informed by the artist’s approach to exploring transitory aspects of textile industrial and cultural heritage. MacLeman integrated research from her Briefing on Soft Arts residency in Zagreb (2023) to develop her approach to applying papermaking processes to found, gathered and reconstituted textiles.
The handmade patchwork artwork from which this design originates was made using pulped lab coats (the kind commonly worn by the museum curators or conservators), some remains of the Balkan garment industry gleaned from Hrelić flea market, unpicked souvenir tablecloths, and industrially produced recycled floor covering. A small patch of green made using grass collected from the site of the Kamensko workers’ hunger strike sits on the right sleeve of the bomber.
The Scattered Acquisitions bomber jacket edition is launching to mark the occasion of Marielle MacLeman’s exhibition We are collecting today for tomorrow commissioned by CIMO Center for Research of Fashion and Clothing, at the Ethnographic Museum, Zagreb, 1–10 October 2024.
This work was developed as part of MacLeman’s exhibition To Impermanent Collections and Scattered Acquisitions, at Kunstverein Aughrim in Spring 2024.
